We Shall Remain

In case you missed it tonight, part 1 of We Shall Remain, the PBS mini-series about the American Indian from 1620 to the present, can be watched online (soon) or on a re-broadcast on your local PBS station. The first episode of this 5-part series, called After The Mayflower, tells the story of the Wampanoag people from their first meeting with the settlers of New Plymouth, through the influx of tens of thousands of English into the Massachusetts Bay Colony (Boston and surrounding towns) in the 1630's, to the horrors of King Philip's War in 1675-76. Other than mild disappointment with the costuming of the English characters (basic greeting-card Pilgrim...all black and brown, complete with buckles on the hats), I thought it was well done. Interestingly, the Plymouth scenes weren't shot at Plimoth Plantation, but at other eastern Massachusetts locations, including Pioneer Village in Salem. Authenticity suffers a bit as a result, but Plimoth Plantation declined to be involved in the project.

The series was shot on film in Super 16 format so it has a nice theatrical look. Here's the trailer.
